Home Building How-To Part 3: Design

So far we have discussed location and finding the right builder. The next step in the process is to design your soon-to-be home. This is probably the most exciting step of the process because it involves fleshing out how your house is going to look and be like. This step of the process will either involve working with an architect to design your custom house, or finding an already drawn house plan. You may think that you’ll be limited if you choose to find a pre-existing house plan but there are thousands for you to browse at Frusterio.com.

Home design is changing and it’s important to know what you’re looking for in a home. Jackie Craven, writer for About.com gives a pretty good list of things that people are now incorporating into their home design. Designers are now starting to create homes that have a “universal design”. This simply means that the home is accessible to people of all ages and abilities. People are also starting to include a lot more storage space in their homes, whether that’s in the form of an attic space, or more walk-in closets.

A really hot trend in home design is outdoor living space. Designers are including more and more outdoor space for people to eat, sit, and entertain. Not only are more people making more of the outdoors part of their floor plan, they are starting to design more flexible floor plans entirely. Rooms with partitions and sliding doors that allow for a more free flow to the entire home are becoming more popular.

Ultimately it comes down to what you’re looking for in a home. It is crucial to start thinking about this in advance, that way you will be making a very thorough decision.

*If you are planning on buying a Westervelt Communities home-site, remember that all design plans must be approved by the ARB.
